There are two main grading scales used to describe the condition of collector-level toys: the "C" scale and AFA ratings.
The "C" scale
The "C" scale rates condition on a scale of one to 10, with a C10 rating indicating high quality and a C1 rating indicating poor quality.
- C-10: Gem Mint. No flaws whatsoever. Since nearly all toys have at least some minor flaw a C-10 specimen is very rate.
- C-9: Mint. The toy looks as good as it did the day it went on the shelf at the toy store. The toy has minimal defects and are excellent collector-quality toys.
- C-8.5: Near Mint. This toy is still highly collectable but has at least one notable flaw which prevented it from being rated C-9.
- C-8: Excellent. This is the lowest collector-grade rating. The toy has visible flaws but still displays well.
- C-6/7: Very Good. These toys have several apparent flaws. Collect them for nostalgia value only or as a place holder in your collection until you can find a better quality piece.
- C-5 and lower: These toys have major flaws. They often have large parts missing and well-worn features. They are most useful as parts for those who enjoy building custom toys.
Action Figure Authority (AFA) ratings
The AFA acts as an objective third party and grades toys on the behalf of sellers.
